Rotary Sri Lanka recently launched a specially commissioned book on its “Schools Re-awaken” Project.
Titled “Straw in Gold” the book consists of over 150 pages of high class photographs carefully selected and accompanied by short descriptive narrative which capture the entire spirit of this novel project which has received international acclaim.
Rotary Sri Lanka together with the Standard Chartered Bank rebuilt 25 schools that were totally destroyed in the tsunami of December 2004 in a 15M USD programme that helped send over 12,000 students back to new model schools with all modern facilities.
The “Schools Re-awaken” Project was the largest ever project undertaken by any single Rotary District worldwide.
The first copy of the book was presented to Rotary International President Wilf Wilkinson at a special ceremony in Colombo.
‘Straw into Gold’ is in many ways a “fairytale come true” and is a real life story of how “dreams can be made real” by the collective efforts of Rotarians around the world.
The book is an essential ‘treasure’ not merely for all those Rotarians who were involved in the project throughout the world, but also for all those who believe in the true spirit of service above self.
