Room to Read USA to equip libraries in all 25 schools

Room to Read USA has agreed to join hands with Rotary in its School Awakening Project and has undertaken to equip the libraries in all 25 schools being rebuilt by Rotary.

Erin Keown Ganju, Chief Operating Officer of Room to Read, was in Sri Lanka recently and had discussions with Rotary officials regarding their interest in contributing towards Rotary’s efforts in rebuilding the schools.

Room to Read will establish a child-friendly learning environment by supplying furniture, maps and posters, educational games and puzzles, English Children’s books and local language children’s books. They will also do training workshops for teachers and librarians.

“Our goal is to not only to assist with immediate educational needs but to establish a long-term presence in Sri Lanka whereby we can implement our full slate of educational programs to assist under-privileged communities in building their educational infrastructure” said Erin.

Room to Read’s mission is to provide under-privileged children with an opportunity to gain the lifelong gift of education. It believes that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and taking control of one’s own life.
