Al Aqsa Vidyalaya in Pottuvil
Al Aqsa Vidyalaya in Pottuvil in the Ampara district, became the second school to commence work in the Rotary Schools Re-awakening project.
A colourful groundbreaking and foundation stone laying ceremony was held last week by the Rotary Club of Kandy – the lead Club handling the rebuilding project.
District Governor Lucky Pieris and members of the Apex Committee participated in the historic event. The entire rebuilding is expected to be completed by the 1st of December 2005.
Al Aqsa is a Primary and Secondary school with classes from Grades 1-10 and has a total of 25 teachers and 504 students.
Earlier this month, Randombe Junior School in Ambalangoda was the first school to begin construction of its new building at relocated premises.
Five other Schools were also given the green light by the Apex Committee after evaluation of their estimates and are expected to commence work in the next two weeks.
Lead Club Colombo Uptown is expected to begin work on Uthayapuram Vidyalaya in the Batticaloa district by the middle of June.
Two more schools in the Batticaloa District - Kayankerni Saraswathy Vidyalaya and Thettativu Sivakalai Vidyalaya, have also received clearance from the Apex Committee. These two schools are handled by the Rotary Clubs of Matale and Batticaloa respectively and work is likely to commence by mid June.
The Rotary Club of Kollonawa will also begin construction of the school allocated to them – Uswathun Hasana Maha Vidyalaya which is in Galle.
The Rotary Club of Trincomalee will begin work on the school allocated to them – Thamaraivil Al-Rawla Vidyalaya in Trincomalee by the first week of June.
The Apex Committee and its sub-committee of architects will be meeting again shortly and are expected to finalise awards of contract with more lead clubs.
