Rotary continues to lead the way in school rebuilding project
Rotary Sri Lanka is setting the pace for the massive rebuilding effort required by the Ministry of Education in the rebuilding of Schools destroyed by the tsunami of December 26th 2004.
The tsunami affected 182 schools throughout the country including 92 which were totally destroyed. A total number of 85,000 students and 3,400 teachers were without schools after the tsunami disaster.
Rotary Sri Lanka was one of the first organizations which offered to rebuild the schools and 25 schools spread across the country were allocated to Rotary for rebuilding.
Whilst most other organizations are offering a range of excuses for not beginning work, Rotary has forged ahead with its own programme. 16 of the 25 schools have already commenced work or are in a position to start work immediately.
Three schools – Al Aqsa in Pottuvil, Al Athan in Nintavur and Randombe School in the town of Ambalangoda in the Galle district, are all now progressinging slightly ahead of schedule.
The first batch of schools is scheduled to be completed by the end of November 2005.
