Rotary International Convention showcases Schools Re-awakening project
The recently concluded Rotary Convention held jointly in Malmo - Sweden and Copenhagen - Denmark showcased the Schools re-awakening project and devoted special coverage to many aspects of the project.
A video of Sri Lanka’s Schools rebuilding project was played at the opening of the plenary session of the Convention. The video clip included an interview with PDG Ravindran – the Chairman of the Apex Committee. Ravindran who is also an incoming Trustee of the Rotary Foundation was formally introduced at the convention.
Our project website was mentioned several times at the Rotary Foundation sessions and workshops as a “model of transparency and accountability” by Foundation Chairman Frank Devlin.
The Convention was also a good opportunity for the Apex Committee members to meet personally with many of our overseas sponsors and thank them for all their support and encouragement.
"It was very satisfying for me to shake the hands of two project partners whom I had hitherto only known from email correspondence. I personally saw how dedicated and committed they all are and I am proud to be associated with the project”. said Albrecht Kurbjuhn representing his Club Kühlungsborn/Bad Doberan of Germany.
“The high visibility the project received at the Convention is a clear sign that it is highly regarded by Rotary International “ added Albrecht Kurbjuhn whose club is equipping the computer centers in two schools whilst another District in Germany (District 1950) is funding the whole cost of rebuilding one school.
A contingent of around 30 Rotarians and their spouses from Sri Lanka attended the Convention – the first of the new century of service by Rotary.
“Beautiful Malmo, wonderful Copenhagen” were the first lines of the song sung by a group of children at the opening ceremony of the Convention – a tune which set the tone of the whole event and infected almost everyone who heard it.
Fittingly, children were at the forefront of all the entertainment at the convention and the entire audience was afforded the opportunity to become children again and share in the magical presentations of well loved fairy tales.
