Rotary to play key role in the rebuilding of Schools
One of the key areas affected by the Tsunami disaster was the damage done to schools. A total number of 59 schools were completely destroyed and a further 102 partially damaged.
Our Rotary District offered to play a lead role in the massive task of rebuilding the schools affected by the Tsunami disaster. Our offer has been graciously accepted by the President of the country and a total of 25 schools – including some of the schools which were totally destroyed have been allocated to Rotary.
Our District is gratified by the huge vote of confidence reposed in it by the leaders of the country and we will do our utmost to ensure that our performance will exceed even our high expectations.
A core group of senior Rotarians have been involved in negotiations with the government and Ministry of Education officials to gather data on all the schools allocated to us in order to estimate the costs of this project.
Initial estimates indicate that a sum of 997 Million Rupees (USD 10M) will be required to complete all the schools allocated to us.
Rotary International is now in its centenary year and we could think of no better way to mark the occasion than
by playing a key role in the rebuilding and restoration of the schools affected by the Tsunami disaster.
Children and education strike a chord in every Rotarian’s heart, and the district is confident that it will be able to muster enough support both locally and internationally to deliver on this huge responsibility.
We will be looking for sponsorship partners in the corporate sector and among overseas clubs to join hands with us in this worthy task.
Full details of all schools will be posted on our website as soon as possible.
