| Danish Rotarians conclude successful visit to Sri Lanka |
| |
A four-member delegation from Denmark was recently in Sri Lanka to see for themselves the scars of the devastation and join fellow Rotarians from Sri Lanka in their challenging task of rebuilding 25 schools destroyed by the tsunami.
PDG Nils Jensen, DG Gunnar Pederson, PP Soren Havemann, and their energetic mediaman Soren spent a very hectic week, meeting with all the key groups they deal with and also traveling to Jaffna, Trincomalee, and Batticaloa to gain first hand experience of the situation in these areas and participate in some of the relief work.
Prior to their departure, the team signed a historic MOU with Rotary Sri Lanka on the assistance they would be providing to the schools.
The Danish team made many friends during their short visit and also strengthened earlier ties they had with the Rotarians of Sri Lanka. It is hoped that this is the beginning of a close co-operation between the two countries and several other aspects are now also on the drawing boards. The two teams are considering twinning some of the clubs for long-term relationships and already a team of Sri Lankans are planning to attend the next Convention which is to be held in Denmark in 2006.
The Rotarians of Denmark had already been assisting Sri Lanka in other projects in the country including the clearing of mines in the North of Sri Lanka and so had already established ties with the Rotarians of Sri Lanka. They were thus able to move much faster and more confidently in their efforts of providing relief support.
Rotary Denmark has kindly agreed to undertake the sponsorship of three of the 25 schools that are being rebuilt by Rotary Sri Lanka. Kudaththanai Karaiyoor in Jaffna, Thamaraivil Al-Rawla in Trincomalee and Sri Vinayagar Vidyalaya in Batticaloa were selected jointly by the Apex Committee and the visiting team.
It is sincerely hoped that the team members will all return to Sri Lanka in December with perhaps more of their colleagues, to participate in the formal handing over of the newly constructed schools back to the Ministry of Education.
Thank you Rotary Denmark – your generosity will long be remembered by a grateful nation.
